Roof of Reprieve

While programming is paused this winter, I have been busy reinvigorating my own artistic practice for the first time in a while — which admittedly has been a little tricky to reconnect with after focussing on arts administration for a few years now. To help revive this part of myself, I’ve been thrilled to be working with ElizaBeth Hill on a large sculptural work, “Roof of Reprieve,” for Ice Follies 2023!

What is Ice Follies?

Ice Follies is a biennial outdoor festival on Lake Nippissing, North Bay, Ontario. The lake acts as source of inspiration for the works created. 2023 celebrates their 10th edition with a theme of Thin Ice. Thirteen artworks are to be presented along with performances, large-scale art installations, community engaged artworks and activities. This free festival is run by Aanmitaagzi, White Water Gallery, and the Near North Mobile Media Lab and is open 24-7 from February 10 – 24, 2023.

What are we building, if it’s not to house future generations?

What are we making?

More akin to a tent than a home built with strong foundations and walls, this structure resonates somewhere in the middle, providing temporary relief from the elements. This structure may provide a roof as a reprieve, and in those moments the interior will offer a glimpse into further reflections.  Everything in our environment emits a frequency of sound which are either audible or inaudible. The interior experience is provided through photographic art and soundscape design, and on the exterior, you'll witness reflections of your surroundings.

Thus far, I have been busy building the structure from wood and aluminum, while ElizaBeth has her attention on the visuals and soundscape for the interior. Next, we will print large images for the interior and I’ll practice programming a mini computer (Raspberry Pi), which will be connected to sensors that trigger the soundscape as you approach.

Wish us luck!

The artists would like to acknowledge that their participation in this festival is possible due to the travel support being offered by Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.
